Dissertation Committee

The dissertation is a paper that is prepared under supervision of the faculty advisor serving as the chair of the Dissertation Committee. The latter should consist of at least four members whose task is to review and approve thesis proposals, and act as examining body for final examination of the candidate on the particular subject.

At the time of the admission to the program each student receives advisement from Graduate Director. After this procedure students are required to form a Program of Study Committee after completing twelve credits of the coursework in residence.

Once this body is formed, the chair assumes the advisement function. Students are expected to meet with their advisors to gain further information about the program, discuss academic plans, and design the Program of Study. However some students may change advisors as they become more familiar with the faculty and refine their dissertation research interests. These changes are made officially by submitting appropriate form.

The Dissertation Committee provides students with the primary guidance in the Ph.D. program. It is assembled when a student determines his program of study. Getting a graduate degree (masters or doctoral) involves much more than a mere competition of a set of credits and courses. This body assists in structuring Program of Study which means the student will be ready to complete his paper and pass comprehensive examinations. Additionally committee members will assist the paper research and guide professional development.
